Tamar Bridge - UK

PROJECT

Background

The Tamar Crossing tidal flow project included the extension of LED road markers onto the Tamar bridge. Only a system with low installation depth capabilities and proven reliability to avoid frequent road closures for repairs was able to fulfill all requirements.

Solution

The 335m A38 Tamar Bridge illuminated Road Stud project won the Award for Road Marking project of the Year. The Tamar crossing project includes the Saltash Tunnel and Tamar Bridge, it can operate as a three lane ‘tidal flow’ system, using mounted overhead signals. The overhead lane signals are supplemented within the tunnel and on the bridge by the Award winning, inductively powered, LED illuminated SMARTSTUD® road markers from 3i Traffic to deter road users from straying into the centre lane against the tidal flow. The second phase of the project was to extend the studs onto the bridge deck, a development which is only possible thanks to the use of iiiPOWER technology (inductive power transfer) and its low installation depth.
