IPT - Inductive Power Transfer
What is it and how does it work?

IPT is the name given to a power transfer technique where power is coupled across an air (or other non-permeable material) gap by magnetic induction.
In other words, power is transfered without direct contact to a cable - wireless.
Key benefits
- Waterproof, no corrosion
- High energy efficiency
- Environmental friendly
- Highest safety rating
- Easy installations
- Fast and easy maintenance
The History of IPT
- In the early 1800s it was discovered that every electrical current produces a magnetic field
- If a coil is placed in that magnetic field it is possible to generate voltage
- In the 1970s Auckland University researchers recognised the potential to harness this science
- Decades of propriety research at the University of Auckland has optimised this system to allow transfer of usable amounts of electrical power wirelessly over large air gaps
- 3i Innovation in-house research and development has lead up to proprietary innovations in the field of effective and efficient communication
- 3i Innovation is regarded as the “centre of excellence” for LED lighting through IPT and ICT worldwide

IPT - Inductive Power Transfer
A safe, efficient form of wireless energy transfer.
ICT - Inductive Communication Transfer
An effective method of transferring data in both directions.
Principles of IPT
- There is a current in the wire (I)
- This current produces a magnetic field (H)
- The coil intercepting this field has voltage (V) induced in it driving a light bulb
- Requires a high frequency generator
- Needs modern controllers
ICT - Inductive Communication Transfer
ICT is IPT Data communication and Diagnosis developed by 3i Innovation.
ICT is an effective method of transferring data in both directions. Our ‘intelligent’ product range has the capability of communication and diagnosis (via ICT to devices, e.g. lights) means that each light device can send and receive information and, therefore, be individually controlled from the power supply.
3i Innovation power supplies can communicate various light sequences for different operating states (flashing, pulsing and degrees of brightness) including for emergency situations or to switch from daytime to nighttime intensity.
Application example in tunnels: Each light unit can undertake tunnel diagnosis by using the collection of environmental data and traffic information collected at multiple points in the tunnel and communicating those findings back to the tunnel control centres.
